Going Green at Wayne
Teaching our campers to be good stewards of the environment is an important part of any camp experience. By spending the summer surrounded by hundreds of acres of forested land with beautiful lakes, we all see, first-hand, the benefits of taking care of our natural surroundings.
During the summer, campers can volunteer to join our Green Team, an off-shoot of our Leadership Program. The Green Team meets throughout the summer to brainstorm ways to reduce our impact on the camp environment and in our communities at home.
Every year, we closely examine our entire operation to identify areas where we can be more environmentally friendly. Here are just a few changes we’ve made over the years:
- Composting all food waste. (returns organic top soil for our spring landscaping)
- Recycling cans, bottles and cardboard.
- Replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFL).
- Electric hand dryers in public bathrooms to cut down on paper towel use.
- Using web forms (i.e. camper application, health history form, etc…) that don’t require paper.
- Reduce the number of mailings thanks to online documents library and web forms.
- Using motion sensors to control lighting in the Field House and The Den.
